A new report suggests some good news for the UK's future economy through the foundation of new nuclear power facilities. The new project will create a possible boost of £30 billion in revenue alongside thousands of skilled jobs. The report by Westinghouse also showed that the benefits would be distributed throughout the country's supply and construction companies. The sentiment was echoed by David Powell, Westinghouse's UK vice president, at the latest Labour conference. The specifics of the big boost are fairly simple. The AP1000 nuclear reactor line would not just provide the initial construction boost. Westinghouse policy would introduce £15 billion from the construction alone. The rest would come from the operation and maintenance of the plants, thanks to policies where local suppliers are used whenever possible. The plants are also generally being recognized by the population as a necessary step in fighting global warming and ultimately achieving an energy independent UK. Creating new jobs will certainly help the plants maintain public support though. The Westinghouse report has already received recognition and support from Union leaders who are pleased with the job creation. Dougie Rooney, Unite's national officer, believes that as many as 10,000 jobs could be formed for highly skilled engineers. This growth could certainly lessen the sting from the current downturn which saw significant layoffs in the engineering sector.
