RSA Grants To Create 2000 New Jobs In Scotland

Monday, 11 August 2008

Regional Selective Assistance grants, or RSA grants, will create or protect roughly 2,000 jobs throughout Scotland. There were 25 Scottish businesses who accepted £13.5 million in total RSA grants in the second quarter. IT projects, design projects, and manufacturing were some of the biggest recipients. The grants relate to a total of £57 million in planned investment by these businesses.

Jim Mather, Enterprise Minister, stated that this shows the great benefits of the RSA in providing for economic growth in difficult times. This move also accompanied other pro-business actions by the government. 150,000 businesses have seen their business rates greatly reduced or even removed. This should be a welcome bonus.

The RSA works as a primary method to create or protect jobs. It awards various discretionary grants to businesses planning investment projects which will form new jobs or protect existing jobs in an "assisted area". These areas are designated by European Community law with the overall projected administered through Scotland's Innovation and Investment Grants unit.

In order to ensure that the terms are met, the RSA grant is usually paid out in a series of installments over a few years. This only happens if job requirements and project expenditure goals are kept. Any numbers listed above just refer to the maximum grant possible if they complete it perfectly. This obviously doesn't always happen, so the end results could be quite different. It's still a good sign for the economy though.
