There's some good news on the job market as Morrisons announces a pledge to form another 5,000 jobs despite the downturn. The major supermarket group, the 4th largest in Britain, announced that there would be new positions created across their chains. The bakery, fish, and butcher counters will all see new positions in the future. They also want to expand their store space to have another 93,000 square metres. They had already agreed in December to purchase 38 of Co-op's stores after they completed the Somerfield acquisition. Most of the staff is already in place for these stores though. Most analysts expect a strong earnings report from Morrisons after a good Christmas season. Some are forecasting that their sales would be up by 9% for December. This announcement came at a welcome time. The government summit on jobs is already formulating new plans to overcome growing unemployment in the country. Gordon Brown actually used Morrisons as an example of remaining hope for the economy and job market. It is also right on the heels of their rival Sainsbury's announcement also forecasting 5,000 new jobs after one of their strongest Christmas seasons. Competitor Tesco isn't so lucky though and many analysts are expecting weak figures in their next report. Next news article: 350 Jobs Go at Empire Direct |
