Local Government Employment Falls |

New studies released through the Office for National Statistics shows grim news for local government employment. Employment through local governments currently provides roughly 2.92 million jobs. This shows a drop of 19,000 jobs from last year, despite a growth of 2,000 new positions from April to June. This may get even worse as a number of councils recently announced new cuts which would drop thousands of jobs not accounted for in the recent study. This decline is generally attributed to the overall slowdown plaguing the country. It especially hit individuals working part-time at the councils as grants dried up. The economy can't be blamed for all the losses though, as separate efficiency efforts from the central government were to blame for a number of cuts. This situation doesn't represent the public sector as a whole though. The same study found that 5,000 jobs had been created in the overall sector since last year's count. It seems that local governments were just not as insulated against the damage from the credit and energy crises. Next news article: 10000 New Jobs From Nuclear Deal |
