Job Losses as Globespan Goes Bust

Thursday, 07 January 2010

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), administrators for the collapsed airline Flyglobespan have said today they are set to make a large number of redundancies.

The collapse of Scotland's biggest airline has meant that 550 out of the 650 workers based in Edinburgh are now jobless. The group, who confirmed yesterday that it had entered voluntary administration, admitted that they had no other way out then to cease all flights and cut jobs.

Trade unions were quick to condemn Flyglobespan's treatment of their staff, some of who were left stranded abroad. The union's national officer for civil aviation, Brian Boyd spoke of the tragedy 800 Flyglobespan employees face, after being thrown into a 'Christmas of misery' with no job and no wages.

He stated that "the manner in which workers can be cast aside in the UK is shocking".

Globespan the parent company operate a fleet of over 10 planes, primarily from Scottish airports to destinations in Spain and the US, the group employs over 900 staff.

Employees at Globespan had their hopes dashed when the company who were spared administration last month failed to receive full payments and funds owed to them by E-Clear, a credit card processing firm.

Job Centre Vacancies says: Not a good week for airline staff! Not only have 550 staff been made redundant and lost their jobs but PWC have yet to make any official announcement with regards to whether the staff will be getting paid anytime soon.
