The banking industry will take a bit of a hit as Barclays plans to slash 300 jobs from their Cardiff home loans branch. Firstplus originally employed 430 in its branch based in Cardiff’s Pentwyn district. They have already stated that drastically decreasing demand has caused them to take no more new customers into their program starting on August 9th. 130 employees will stay at the branch to handle the existing customers whose current loans will not be affected. Unite, the largest trade union in the United Kingdom, has already stated that they were “incensed” by Barclays choice. Their official position is that they can understand that the market is declining, but cannot support Barclays extreme decision to slash so much of their Cardiff branch. They will be forgiving if work is found to replace the lost jobs. Unfortunately Barclays has few banks in the Wales area, which means that convenient replacements will not be easy to find. Regardless, Barclays has already formed an agreement with Unite to provide alternatives for any employees that wish to still work for them. Next news article: Another 1000 Construction Job Cuts |
