Shocking new figures highlighted by the Liberal Democrats have revealed that over 210,000 people are seeking work in the construction industry with only 300 jobs available in the UK.The figures were revealed in Parliamentary answers and the Governments own JobCentre Plus website. Official figures show that over 210,000 people on JobSeeker's Allowance were looking for construction related employment, but the Government's website lists just 302 jobs for the entire country! The huge gap between jobseekers and available posts was exposed last week by the Liberal Democrats. They said that the lack of jobs were fuelled by the collapse and liquidation of hundreds of construction firms. A total of 2,700 firms went bankrupt in 2008, according to recent figures, this was up from 1,994 in 2007 – an astonishing 40 per cent rise in one year! Julia Goldsworthy, Lib Dem Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary said 'the current Government has done very little to help the construction industry in recent years. We are unaware of the situation for last year and 2010 could paint an even bleaker picture'. The Liberal Democrats want to spend over £1.4 billion on refurbishing thousands of empty and run down houses across Britain – plans that would create hundreds of new jobs and give a much needed boost to the construction sector along with tackling huge waste caused by derelict and empty homes. Job Centre Vacancies says: Gordon Brown and the Labour Government have bailed out the banks but seem to have forgotten about the small businesses that have been hard hit in the construction sector. The Liberal Democrats plans to inject cash into the industry will help those of you that are looking for construction jobs, but will also have a knock-on effect with other business who work in unison with the construction and refurbishment of homes.
