A taxi driver uses a vehicle to transport people from one location to another. There are two types of taxis driven by taxi drivers; they are black cab and mini cab. A black cab driver operates the traditional hackney carriage and a minicab is provided on a private hire basis. The differences between a black cab and minicab affect how one traditionally gets a cab. Black cabs can be hailed down on the street while minicabs are scheduled in advance. Those considering a career as a taxi driver must have excellent driving skills and should have a thorough understanding of safety rules and regulations. Paying attention to the rules of the road will ensure that your passengers are comfortable and well protected while under your care. Since you will be dealing with people on a regular basis, good customer service skills are also required. Paying careful attention to time and adhering to schedules will ensure that you are available or all of your customers when needed. It is also important to have working knowledge of your community and local vicinity as well as the ability to find directions, use maps and other navigational tools and systems. As a taxi driver you will also need to provide additional assistance for those who are handicapped, disabled or have difficulty entering or exiting the vehicle. A taxi driver also needs to be able to handle passengers that have attitudes, are drunk or behave in other inappropriate manners. Good maths skills are important since you will be dealing with fares and currency as well. There are many opportunities available for those considering a career as a taxi driver. You can work for a company, obtain your hackney carriage license, work as a self employed taxi driver by either renting or owning your own vehicle. One of the greatest advantages of being a taxi driver is the flexibility in work scheduling. You have the freedom to set your own hours. Many taxi drivers work evenings, weekends and during holidays as this can often be the best time for service. Averaging between 40 and 60 hours per week is normal. To become a taxi driver you will need to obtain your license and this varies by region. Check with the Public Carriage Office for more information regarding specific qualifications. Generally, however, you will need to pass a background criminal check, in most regions you will need to be over 18, however in Northern Ireland, the age requirement is 21, you will also need to pass a medical test, a geographical knowledge test, a driving test, and have had a full driving license for at least one year. Newly hired taxi drivers averaging 40 hours per week can earn approximately between £12,000 and £20,000 per year.
