A large goods vehicle driver is similar to a delivery van driver, however they handle large goods, often totaling over 7.5 tonnes. Since there is a great deal of physical lifting involved with the job, a large goods vehicle driver should be in good physical condition and able to load and unload heavy cargo. Having a pleasant disposition and a friendly manner when dealing with customers is also important. You will need to be organised and ensure that you can keep track of all paperwork. Training as a large goods vehicle driver begins with obtaining your Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) license. To qualify you must be over 18 years of age, have a driving record that's in good standing, ensure that your vision and health is good by passing a medical test, and also take a theory test that consists of English and maths. Some companies provide LGV training for their employees, if you are not employed you can obtain your LGV license by attending a driving school. There are two parts to the LGV test, a Category C and a Category C+ E. A Category C is for driving vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and a Category C + E enables you to tow lorries with a trailer. Those who seek their license after September 2009 will also need to obtain a Certificate of Professional Competence or CPC.
