Emergency Health Services |
|
When somebody needs urgent medical attention outside of a hospital setting, it is the duty of the emergency health services to respond as quickly as possible reaching them wherever they are and treating them as best they can. Whether accident or critical health problem, the emergency services will often be the first point of care for a patient. The work of the emergency health services providing the initial treatment is vital in saving lives, limbs and reducing the pain and suffering of the patient. There are a few different roles that you could opt for in this field although they all overlap somewhat. While not often working in an emergency situation, an ambulance care assistant is responsible for transporting patients to and from hospital and doctor's surgeries where they are not able to. That said, practical medical skills such as resuscitation, first aid and pain relief may be needed at any given moment without warning so you must be prepared. But for the mainpart it is your driving skills and patient interaction that is most important in such a job. Working in emergency situations requires clear but quick thinking under intense pressure and decisions can really be the difference between life or death. Normally working as part of a team with other emergency service personnel, being able to communicate with both patients and colleagues is important so the correct course of treatment can be administered as quickly as possible. Responsible for driving an ambulance in emergency situations, the emergency care assistant will need to be a very good driver while also requiring some basic medical training in order to assit paramedics with patients whenever they need it. Responding to emergency calls from the public and liasing with response units such as ambulances is the job of an emergency medical dispatcher and clear communication skills are paramount in such a role. You will need to remain calm and also help those on the other end of the phone to remain calm also if they are in a state of panic or alarm. The primary part of the emergency medical response team, a paramedic will have a great deal more medical training and experience than care assistant and ambulance technicians meaning they are responsible for the diagnosis and assessment along with much of the immediate treatment. When others begin careers in other emergency response positions, they will often have a career as a paramedic as their eventual goal. |
