The construction industry is both seasonal and closely linked to the overall health of the economy which means a large turnover of jobs and thus a continual flow of new vacancies. It can mean periods of unemployment at times if the building work is not available but even so salaries can be good and qualifications are not always required. An architect has to go through many years of training and on the job experience to become fully qualified and most people do not realise this. However, with salaries starting at £50,000 per year when you are qualified, it is a profession which attracts many people. As the foundation of the whole building industry, bricklayers don't always get the credit they deserve for what is quite a precise skill. Work can be repetitive at times but salaries starting at £15,000 a year are just reward for those willing to work in all conditions. Working in a builder's merchant, you must have excellent working knowledge of all building supplies and a personable manner when dealing with customers. It can be quite manual work so being physically fit and strong helps. The work that is done by surveyors in the building industry is essential to make sure properties, commercial or residential, are safe, properly planned and adhere to all planning laws in the UK. Qualifications can be achieved on site or off site depending on your preference. This role, like many in the construction industry, involves working with your hands, heavy lifting and occassional teamwork. Creativity is sometimes a benefit but even when it is not, accuracy is a must. Working in both commercial and residential properties, a carpet fitter must be flexible and should be able to work around the clients other commitments which could involve weekend or evening work. |
