Additionally, a bus driver must have a strong sense of safety procedures and the ability to keep passengers under control while driving. Unruly passengers are not only annoying but pose a safety hazard to all passengers on the bus. Bus drivers must be able to keep control of the bus while dealing with all passengers in a kind and courteous manner. A bus driver must be assertive when needed, yet polite to all passengers. If you will be driving long distances, having the ability to speak one or more language can prove beneficial. In addition to driving skills, a bus driver also performs a variety of customer service tasks. When passengers board a bus, it is the bus driver that takes the passenger's fare and issues tickets. Additionally, the bus driver must check and verify transport passes. Other responsibilities for a bus driver include providing help and assistance for passengers that might have difficulties boarding or exiting the bus. If passengers have questions regarding bus fares, routes, or schedules it is the bus driver who will provide the information needed. Those who seek employment as a bus driver should be at least 21 years old and will need a Passenger Carrying Vehicle license in addition to a full EU driving license. For those who have a full EU license, it is possible to be hired by a bus company that will train you until you obtain your PCV (passenger carrying vehicle) license. New bus drivers approximately earn between £12,000 and £14,000 per year. Once experience is gained salaries between £15,000 and £18,000 are to be expected.
